Your child will thrive in a safe, secure environment surrounded by teachers that truly care about them and are invested in their success. Our goal is to provide your child with a fun-filled experience that will leave them excited to bring their newly mastered skills home to share with you.

The curriculum applied in our three-year-old program has been created by Wendy, our owner and director. Wendy has over 30 years of classroom experience and has incorporated both old school and new learning techniques & objectives into our curriculum. For the three-year-old classroom, the curriculum is based on the knowledge that this is often the child’s first experience in a school setting. At Polka Dot Dragon Preschool, we provide a positive first classroom experience by ensuring your child and their teacher form a strong bond. Our teachers provide plenty of positive reinforcement in order to create that bond with your child and to continuously encourage them during the learning process. We want your child to feel comfortable approaching their teacher with the knowledge that they will always be there to motivate them and to help whenever necessary.
In our program, much of our focus is spent on building and enhancing self-help skills. These skills include your child learning how to dress themselves for outside weather, putting shoes on after a nap, and becoming more independent when going to the bathroom. Once your child feels confident taking care of their basic needs on their own, we can move on to incorporate more lessons that strengthen small and large motor skills as well as cognition.
At Polka Dot Dragon Preschool, we base our learning around fun. We love to see the children laugh and have a great time while growing confident in their new skills. We provide hands-on activities that teach letters and numbers while also increasing motor abilities and we use the Letter People Program for letter and sound recognition. In the Letter People Program, each letter is introduced with a different character and a catchy song to help your child commit it to memory. Basic writing skills are introduced through tactile experiences by tracing with many different media including pencils, play dough, shaving cream, and other materials.

When it comes to math, we want our students to learn to identify numbers one through ten, but more importantly to count and acknowledge the relationship between the numbers (for example, we want them to recognize that five comes after four, and five is more than four). We count everything and anything throughout the program and by the end of the year, your child will be more than prepared to further advance their math skills.

Creativity is a key aspect of our program at Polka Dot Dragon Preschool. Each day your child will be able to complete a different art project. The projects are all kid-friendly and each project is based on a weekly theme. Your child will have the opportunity to paint, cut, color, and use other media to express themselves. Some themes include: apples, transportation, community helpers, holidays, and many more. Occasionally we also have special days to go along with our weekly theme where your child can dress up. They can dress as a farmer during farm week, or like their favorite superhero during community helper week. During holiday week, your child can participate in a pajama day.
At Polka Dot Dragon Preschool, your child will learn to interact with their peers in large and small group settings. Being in these groups encourages social growth and communication skills. It can sometimes be difficult for young children to share adult attention, wait in line, take turns, or raise their hand. Our classroom setting is designed to provide many opportunities to practice and model these behaviors.
Our classroom is divided into center areas including library, science, and computer centers. The library was created to be an inviting center where your child can learn to love books and develop a desire to want to read for themselves. The science center is filled with STEM activities that your child can work on at their own pace and enhance their problem-solving skills. The computer center is where your child can explore and play many educational games. The home living center is changed monthly to become a kitchen, beauty salon, bakery, vet clinic, or fire station all to elicit realistic play.

Each Fall, the class will move on to the four-year-old classroom after an evaluation to determine if they have acquired the basic program objectives necessary to move forward. These objectives include basic letter recognition, one to one correspondence for numbers one through ten, counting to twenty independently, identifying basic shapes and colors, cutting with scissors, coloring, and pencil grip. Evaluation includes social skills such as taking turns, listening to directions, and self-help skills. It also includes large motor movement activities such as skipping and riding tricycles.

Our three-year-old class is led by the wonderful Miss Liz. Miss Liz has worked at our school for over 20 years starting out as an assistant teacher. She went on to be a lead teacher and later she became our assistant director! Both of her boys have completed our program and they are now attending college.
